Boardshorts vs. Swim Trunks for Boys | Seaesta Surf
Not all kids’ swimwear is created equal. Here's the real difference between boardshorts and swim trunks—and why we only make one of them.
They’re Not the Same Thing
Let’s clear it up: boardshorts and swim trunks are two totally different things.
Many people lump them together, but if your kid is spending real time in the water—or running around the beach all day—the differences matter.
Here’s the breakdown:
-
Swim trunks are usually made with all-synthetic materials (like nylon or polyester), include a thin mesh liner, and have a full elastic waistband.
-
They’re made for quick dips and light activity—not all-day surf, skate, or sand.
-
Boardshorts were originally designed for surfers. They typically have no liner and a drawstring waist that actually stays put. The fit is more dialed, and they’re built for movement.
Where Seaesta Surf Boardshorts Fit In
Our boardshorts are inspired by classic 1960s surf styles—shorter, slimmer, and way more wearable for kids.
We’ve updated them with modern stretch, organic cotton (52%) / recycled polyester (48%) fabric, and super functional, yet stylish details like scalloped hems and real drawstrings.
We don’t do long, baggy 90s-style boardshorts for the smaller kids—they overwhelm smaller frames and fall down. And we definitely don’t do trunks with thin, itchy mesh liners (aka the first thing most kids ask to cut out anyway). Sand gets stuck, they can cause chafing & diapers are a no-go in there.
Seaesta boardshorts are made for kids who actually move:
surf, skate, snack, nap, repeat.
